Victor Saunders

Victor is a world-renowned British mountaineer and became a UIAGM mountain guide in 1996 after a career as an architect in London. He relocated to Chamonix, France in 2003 becoming a member of the SNGM (National Syndicate of French Mountain Guides).

He has climbed extensively throughout Europe, the Himalayas and Karakoram achieving many first ascents including the North Pillar of Spantik. He recently calculated that he’s spent five years of his life under canvas!

Victor summitted Mount Everest for his first of six times in 2004 and with back to back summits on Aconcagua in 2013, he completed his Seven Summits bid.

His ascents list is predominantly on climbs of a remote and desperately hard nature, and Victor is still bubbling over with enthusiasm for the peaks and peoples of the Himalayas after 20 years of climbing.

In addition to being an IFMGA guide, Victor is a recipient of the Boardman Tasker prize for mountain literature and won the Grand Prize at the International Mountain Book Festival at Passey in 2015 for his book “Les Tribulations de Mick & de Vic en Himalaya”.

Dr. Douglas Davis

Dr. Davis is a board certified radiologist with practice specialization in neuroradiology, emergency radiology and traumatology. Dr. Davis trained at Yale, where he met his Ukrainian-born wife, Dr. Nataliya Uboha. Both Dr. Davis and his wife were part of Yale’s Medical Scientist Training Program, obtaining PhDs in neuroscience in addition to their medical doctorates and post-graduate specializations in radiology and oncology, respectively.

Prior to February 24, 2022, Dr. Davis was practicing full-time with a large private group in Wisconsin. With Russia’s invasion, Dr. Davis helped evacuate his wife’s family to the safety of their home in Wisconsin and then he stepped away from clinical practice to pursue full-time medical relief and humanitarian assistance for those suffering in Ukraine and for those protecting Ukrainian freedom, sovereignty, and self-determination.

Dr. Davis and his Ukrainian physician family have leveraged their healthcare backgrounds and networks in the USA and Ukraine to mobilize resources and assistance via a number of nonprofits and NGOs. They are part of the Ukrainian Medical Association of North America (UMANA), a nonprofit organization that has facilitated medical missions and sent hundreds of tons of medical aid to Ukraine since the war began. Dr. Davis now serves on the Board of the U.S. charity Give To The World as their Chief Operations Officer, helping to coordinate the assistance they provide to Ukraine and other conflict zones. Dr. Davis also works with a variety of other mostly volunteer organizations, including Rotary, Be An Angel, Friends of Be An Angel, IDA Foundation in the Netherlands, Help Heroes of Ukraine and others. He also works closely with volunteer partners in the healthcare networks of Yale, University of Wisconsin, Medical College of Wisconsin/Froedtert, and others throughout the U.S. and Ukraine. To borrow from a MSF canon, it is these partnerships of committed volunteers that Dr. Davis envisions as the “seeds” which will help Ukraine to move mountains. The MSF mission resonates deeply with Dr. Davis, and he feels honored and privileged to have joined the team.

Andreas Gassner, “Andi”

What should it be, snow, ice or rock – Andi is everywhere at home in the Zell am See Kaprun region in Salzburger Land. Andi grew up in Zell am See in the shadow of the Hohe Tauern and kept a distance from Grossglockner in his young years. It wasn’t until he was 13 that he discovered skiing and started doing it with passion. He quickly got into the pull of the mountains and started climbing and climbing in rock and ice.

The mountains took up an ever-increasing part of his life. He became youth director of the Alpine Club section Zell am See, mountain rescue man and completed his training as a ski and snowboard instructor. During his studies he devoted himself to meteorology, because you can use weather science when mountaineering. Where did he do that? Of course in the Tyrolean capital Innsbruck. His travels took him to the Eastern Alps around Piz Bernina and Biancograt. Soon he couldn’t get past Chamonix and Mont Blanc – eventually traveling to the high mountains of Bolivia and Chile.

“As a mountain guide, I have really found my calling and am happy every time I look in the faces of my guests at the summit or after a hammer deep snow day and the grin from my left to the right ear no longer seems to go away. Then I am happy and exactly where I always wanted to go.”

Yulia Kovaleva

Born and raised in Mariupol, Donetsk region, I pursued my education at the Donetsk Institute of Social Education. From 2000 until the onset of the conflict on February 24, 2022, I worked as a practical psychologist at primary school 52 in Mariupol, achieving a higher qualification category. Starting from 2018, I took on roles as a coordinator, facilitator, and psychologist in various international projects involving Ukrainian schoolchildren.

On March 2, 2022, like all residents of Mariupol, I found myself in a besieged city, grappling to survive without basic necessities like water, food, gas, electricity, and communication. Amidst another Russian air raid on March 10, 2022, a bomb struck just 20 meters from the building where I was staying. The structure remained intact, but all 12 floors were stripped of windows, and the blast wave tore away doors. In freezing temperatures of -5 degrees Celsius, people were literally stranded outside.

In the wake of this devastation, residents sought refuge in the building’s basement. However, it was an ordinary basement, not equipped for long-term habitation. Escaping this situation posed a significant challenge due to constant shelling from various weapons. By March 17, 2022, Russian tanks had positioned themselves near the building. Toward the end of March, I managed to travel to the village of Mykilske, but my journey faced further obstacles. A process called “filtering” awaited all of us, requiring weeks, and sometimes months, of waiting in lines to obtain a piece of paper termed a “document” by the occupation authorities. This document required submission of fingerprints, examination of photos on phones, personal correspondence, and internet search history. If anything raised suspicion, the individual would be taken away, leaving much to speculation about their fate.

Given the near-impossibility of traveling to independent Ukraine, my route led me through Russia to reach Lithuania. Why Lithuania? Friends I had collaborated with on various projects resided there, eagerly awaiting us and offering their assistance as we resettled in a new environment. Today, I strive to integrate into this new chapter of life and provide my expertise to support the children and families of Ukraine who are impacted by war.
